TxGCP partners with WEPAN to offer...

"In the Spotlight 2009: Best and Emerging Practices" &  "Making STEM Connections as Big as Texas"
 

 Friday, June 19, 2:00 - 5:45 p.m.
 
Spotlight 2009 will highlight best and emerging practices in engineering education from WEPAN partners and members, TxGCP mini-grant recipients, and others across Texas in a poster session featuring mini-presentations & discussions. 
 
Making STEM connections as Big as Texas, a mini conference for WEPAN conference participants and Texas STEM professionals, will follow. Connect with colleagues, engage in discussions, discover benefits of WEPAN and learn effective strategies to strengthen STEM programs.  Friday afternoon concludes the WEPAN conference with a networking happy hour.
 
Registration and details about the 2009 Spotlight Session and Making STEM Connections as Big as Texas will be available by March 1, 2009.

DragonflyTV Bilingual SciGirls Videos and Activities
With the goal of supporting education programs, Twin Cities Public Television is creating a set of bilingual SciGirls videos and activities, and offering $7,000 to organizations with creative ideas for using these resources to increase Hispanic/Latina girls' engagement in STEM. Any non-profit organization serving youth from Spanish-speaking households is encouraged to apply. SciGirls offers fun science experiences for girls across the country. New Great Science for Girls Web Site
Explore the new Great Science for Girls (GSG) Web site, developed by the Educational Equity Center. The Web site is a valuable resource for afterschool program directors, practitioners, parents, intermediaries, and researchers. GSG has assembled a wide range of resources, literature, and research to assist in discussions with funders, community members, and other stakeholders regarding girls and science. Also available on the site is a list of evidence-based curriculum that is successful in stimulating girls' interest in STEM.

The International Technology Education Association (ITEA) is joining forces with Engineer Your Life (EYL), a national campaign to showcase engineering as an exciting and rewarding career choice for high school girls. ASCE and WGBH Webinar: "Effectively Communicating Engineering Careers to High School Girls"

Many people who love being engineers have said that they didn't consider engineering, or even know what it was, until someone suggested it as a career option. Sometimes just one adult can make all the difference in helping young people discover their dream jobs. Participants will leave this 45-minute Webinar with new, research-based messaging and outreach resources from the Engineer Your Life project that will help them reach out and encourage youth, especially high school girls, to consider engineering as a career option.

Imagine That! Engineering Innovation
Every year the National Academy of Engineering sponsors an engineering essay contest on the EngineerGirl website for students across the nation.  Students in grades 3-12 can compete for cash prizes.  Guidelines and related information about the contest can be found on the EngineerGirl website. The deadline is March 1, 2009.

    Women in Engineering ProActive Network (WEPAN)

    Save the Date!  WEPAN is coming to Austin: June 17-19, 2009 

    Center Stage: Effective Strategies for Recruitment and Talent Development
     
    Women in Engineering ProActive Network (WEPAN) is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the climate for and success of all women in engineering. WEPAN's national conference gathers 200-plus professionals annually to translate the most current research into best practices.  Recurring and emerging issues are addressed by participants representing industry, community college and universities, K-12 and informal education, policy makers and other advocates.  Dedicated to creating changes that enhance the success of women of all races and ethnicities in science, technology, engineering and math. 
     
    A special event co-hosted by the TxGCP, WEPAN, and SWE will occur Friday afternoon, June 19th.  Be sure to be in Austin for this exciting collaborative event!  Preliminary information may be found online at the WEPAN website.
